Tigers reach tourney finals

The Peterborou­gh Gauvreau and Associates Minor Mosquito AA Tigers reached the final of the Cambridge AAA Tournament on Father’s Day weekend.

They lost the championsh­ip game to the London Badgers 9-5. The Tigers beat Guelph Royals

7-4 in game one. The Tigers trailed 2-1 before scoring two runs in the top of the fifth and four in the seventh. Alex Kuypers was the winning pitcher and had two hits. Casey Richardson and Blake Moncrief pitched in relief. In game two, the Tigers spotted the Mississaug­a Majors a 1-0 lead then stormed back for an 11-1 win. Travis Heffernan, Declan Ready and Ian Neck had two hits. Jack Gauvreau and Ready hit triples. Kyle Duda hit a double and two RBI. Aiden Stabler picked up the win and Hunter Young pitched the final two innings.

In the third game, the Tigers beat London 16-5 breaking the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning to secure a berth in the final. Kuypers hit three doubles. Gauvreau, Heffernan, Ready and Richardson also hit doubles in the 11-hit effort. Gus Reid pitched six strong innings for the win. James Vatcher-Norman pitched the final inning and contribute­d two RBI and solid play at shortstop.

In the final, the Badgers jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Tigers closed to within 6-4 but a critical play at the plate went against the Tigers and crushed the comeback. Vatcher-Norman had two hits including a double. Jag Turner and Ready also had doubles. Moncrief and Stabler scored two runs each. Kuypers took the loss. Stabler and Young pitched in relief.

In league play, Neck shut out the Pickering Red Sox 21-0 on Tuesday. The Tigers had 19 hits. Gauvreau crushed a triple. Their next game is Saturday at East City Bowl at 3:30 p.m. against Oshawa.
