Seals draft Evans, Wings take Currier
Sweeting drafted in NLL expansion draft and then traded to Buffalo Bandits
Several Peterborough Lakers players are moving to new teams in the National Lacrosse League following Monday’s expansion draft.
With their first round pick, the second pick overall, the San Diego Seals took Peterborough’s Turner Evans, who had been left off the Toronto Rock’s protected list.
The other expansion team, the Philadelphia Wings, took Peterborough’s Josh Currier, left unprotected by the Rochester Knighthawks, in the fourth round.
The Seals then picked Peterborough’s Bryce Sweeting, left unprotected by the Colorado Mammoth, in the fifth round, only to quickly trade him to the Buffalo Bandits for defenceman Ethan Schott and a second-round pick, 17th overall, in the 2018 NLL entry draft.
“I’d like to thank the Colorado Mammoth organization, fans and most of all my teammates for the memories over the past three seasons,” Sweeting stated on social media. “Excited to be joining the Buffalo Bandits and looking forward to what’s ahead in Banditland.”
Peterborough Lakers general manager Paul Day is the head coach and general manager of the Wings.
Meanwhile, Peterborough Laker Kyle Buchanan, a Nepean native, was signed by the Seals earlier this month after being traded by the Black Wolves. He would have become an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 1. That made Buchanan the first Seals player in team history.
The existing NLL teams were able to protect 12 players in the expansion draft. The draft went for nine rounds, 18 selections overall. No current NLL team could more than two players.
