Warming Room seeks volunteers for homemade meals
Dinners for 35 prepared off-site, then delivered to Murray St.
The Warming Room needs meal volunteers. These volunteers (or groups) will prepare meals at their home or location and then transport the food to the Warming Room, located at Murray Street Baptist Church, 175 Murray St.
Volunteers should prepare enough food to feed 35 people and deliver it between 8:45 and 9:15 p.m. to allow for setting up before the guests arrive at 9:30 p.m. Suggested meals are chili, hearty soups, stews, shepherd's pie, baked pasta, lasagna, and sliced ham, potatoes and vegetables. Meals should not be over-spiced.
It is not necessary to have multiple courses, but some volunteers also provide salad and dessert. It is also requested, but not mandatory, that meal volunteers bring two litres of milk and two loaves of broad that are made available for guests in the mornings.
Meals can be made ahead of time and frozen but should be fully heated when guests arrive. The Warming Room has crock pots, so if you bring the meal in your own pots, you can transfer it so you can take your pots home with you.
Alternatively, arrangements can be made for you to pick your dishes up later. The Warming Room also has ovens, stoves and microwaves for keeping things hot or heating them, as well as all the pots, dishes, and cutlery necessary for the meal.
The Warming Room does not serve a sit-down meal; guests eat in the kitchen or as they set up their cot. If there is food still available overnight, guests can eat if they are hungry. Meal volunteers can stay and help serve the meal and spend time with the guests, or they can simply drop off the meal.
Meal volunteers typically sign up for the same night each month, but other schedules and one-time meals can also be arranged.
The Warming Room is open year-round seven nights a week, providing a safe place for those who find themselves homeless. It also works to connect people with services that can help them meet their goals and better their quality of life.
To sign up as a meal volunteer contact Tammy, Warming Room co-ordinator, at 705-977-2324 or tkuehne@warmingroom.ca.

“This ‘ripped from the headlines’ play is an unflinching exploration of social media and cyberbullying among today’s youth. Playwright Judith Thompson dives deep into the heart of our culture to examine the roots of sexual violence and the culture of toxic masculinity we struggle to understand,” states the theatre’s website.
