- CAROLINE MCCONNELL Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

The Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) resumes monthly meetings, following the summer break, on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Education Centre Guest Services Building at Riverview

Park and Zoo. The group regularly meets the first Friday of each month.

The PAA is also resuming their 45-minute Novice Astronomy Classes at 6 p.m. just prior to the regular meeting.

“These classes will introduce you to equipment, software and many other astronomy related subjects,” says Rick Stankiewicz, PAA publicity director. “You will get hands on time with equipment and learn to use it and other tools of astronomy.

You will also learn to locate constellations, stars, planets and other objects in the sky. We will also throw in a self-paced course on Viewing the Moon.”

The main presentation at 7:30 p.m. features a Skype talk by Dr. Luc Simard, director of the National Research Council (NRC), Astronomy Technology Program, Hertzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics, Victoria, B.C.

“The topic is yet TBD,” says Stankiewicz. ”But as a professional astronomer who started as an amateur, he always likes to get back to his roots and talk to the public about astronomically related subjects that are his life’s work and interest. Don’t miss a unique opportunity to hear first hand from one of Canada’s astronomy research specialists.”

Following the main presentation (s) stay for The Sky This Month, to learn information about the locations of the planets of the solar system.

Everyone is welcome. This is an excellent opportunity to come and check out the PAA and all it has to offer, at no cost. It is an all ages meeting andthe venue is barrier free.
