Artist from U.K. specializes in working with clay
She now lives in a small cottage on the shores of Pigeon Lake
This is another in a series of articles profiling artists and artisans in the Otonabee Ward.
Kawartha Potters Guild member June Goodwin was born in Meppershall, England, a rural village listed in the Domesday book from 1063. She started her artistic career studying fashion at Luton University, U.K. and Fabric at the School of Craft and Design (SOCAD) at Sheridan College in Oakville.
“Having explored various media over the years, I now work exclusively in clay, producing practical items that are not only useful and attractive, but hopefully a joy to use,” says Goodwin. “My current work is focused on surface design that uses addition and subtraction to create one-of-a-kind surfaces.”
As a member of the guild, Goodwin has served as chair, treasurer and helped organize programs. She was one of the core group of volunteers to spearhead the move to the studio and gallery at 993 Talwood Dr. and continues to support the guild as an instructor and by showing her work in the gallery. Her work can also be seen at the “ARTISANity” show held bi-annually by the Artisans Centre. She has taken numerous ceramic workshops in both Canada and the UK.
She loves teaching, and says, "You send out information and ideas, and the most amazing pieces result! I learn so much from my students. The guild offers many ways to try your hand with clay and many who start find that it centres them from their busy lives.”
Goodwin now lives in a small cottage on the shores of Pigeon Lake, working out of her home studio.
The guild’s fall pottery classes begin the week of September 10, including their new class Centering: Pottery, Yoga and Meditation on Friday afternoons with Janette Fronz, as well as their First Spin class on Saturday, September 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for those who have always wanted to try working on the wheel but have not yet done so. For more information, please visit their website.
The Kawartha Potters Guild and gallery is located at 993 Talwood Dr., which is open from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and sells a range of creations by their members as well as members of the Artisans Centre. Yard and Plant Sale
Everyone is invited to the annual Yard and Plant Sale at Grace United Church,
481 Howden St., takes place on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. The parking lot will be full of treasures for all ages, with items such as glass wear, toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, craft items and of course plants. There will be bins for scrap metal and old electronics such as televisions and stereos in the back corner of the parking lot available on from September 4 until the end of the sale.
Once again this year, members of the Grace Scouting troup will be cooking peameal on a bun and burgers for breakfast or lunch. All proceeds from the sale go to the church’s November 2018 trip to Honduras. This year their project is building new washroom facilities at the elementary school in Nuevo Paraiso. For over 10 years a group from Grace United under the guidance of Friends of Honduran Children based in Peterborough has travelled to Honduras where they have built homes, schools and distributed school supplies to countless rural mountain schools.
