Aggravated assault charge laid

-

A 35-year-old Beechwood Drive man faces charges including aggravated assault after an injured man was found lying on a curb in the area of Parkhill Road and Auburn Street by city paramedics shortly after midnight Friday.

He said he had been assaulted near the Rotary Greenway Trail near Parkhill Road, city police said. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and then to a Toronto hospital for more treatment.

Investigators determined the attacked man and the accused know each other and that they had a physical altercation the day before, city police said. During the fight, the man was struck several times in the face, had his wallet stolen and cellphone damaged.

The accused attended police headquarters on Friday, where he was arrested and charged.

William Christopher Joyce was charged with aggravated assault, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000 and appeared in weekend and statutory holiday court on Saturday before being released for a Sept. 6 court date.
