Finn still wants to make a plea, agrees to get a lawyer

- TODD VANDONK

Terrance Finn has agreed to seek advice from a lawyer, but maintained in court he wanted to take a plea after his wife was shot.

“Let the crosses fall where they may,” Finn said from the prisoner’s box in Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on Tuesday.

Finn was charged with firstdegree murder after his wife Sandra Finn, 70, was shot to death in broad daylight Aug. 22 in the parking lot of the Home Depot store at Lansdowne St. W. and Park St.

Appearing by video from the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay on Friday, Finn told Justice of the Peace Jason Mariasine several times that he didn’t have any intentions to hire counsel.

Justice Lisa Cameron presided over the matter on Tuesday. She advised the 73-year-old that it was in his best interest to seek legal advice, despite Finn wanting to take a plea and for the matter to move quickly.

“We need to move carefully through each step of the matter,” she told the accused.

Finn said he has listened to everything duty counsel Sil Salvaterra has told him.

“A lot of this stuff I don’t understand,” a somewhat confused Finn said, requesting that family members sit in to advise him on the matter.

A court order prevents Finn from having contact with handful of people, including his two sons Mike and Kevin. Both sat in the front of the courtroom with their significant others on Tuesday. Before being escorted out of the courtroom, he faced his family for brief moment with a look of sorrow.

Finn is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday.

Finn was arrested by Peterborough Police in the parking lot of the Home Depot shorty after his wife had been shot. She was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where she died.

Sandra Finn, a retired secretary and insurance adjuster at the former Fleetwood Canada Inc. recreational vehicle factory in Lindsay, also leaves behind a mother, a brother and a sister, and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held for her Monday in Peterborough
