SDA misses scrimmages with thumb injury

- MIKE DAVIES Examiner Sports Director mike.davies@peterboroughdaily.com

Third-year centre and Toronto Maple Leafs’ draft pick Semyon Der-Arguchintsev was the lone player unable to participate in scrimmages on day two of Petes training camp on Tuesday because of injury.

Der-Arguchintsev sprained his thumb last week while training, said Petes GM Mike Oke.

“We felt under the circumstances it was probably appropriate to give him a little more time to rest and not to push it,” Oke said.

Watchful eye

New Petes head coach Rob Wilson sat by himself to watch Tuesday’s scrimmages.

Wilson said he wanted to watch the players unfiltered by the opinions of other staff who may be more familiar with the players.

“I’m really trying to look at everyone with an open mind,” Wilson said.

He said he was looking forward to hearing the rest of his staff’s opinions after he formulated his own.

Shapiro joins Coyotes

Petes mental performance coach Brenley Shapiro has been hired as a mental performance consultant by the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the team,” Shapiro announced on Twitter.

Petes GM Mike Oke said it will not interfere with Shapiro’s work with the Petes.

“It’s nice that she is working with an NHL team,” Oke said. “She is a real asset to our players.”

Local talent gets a look

Among the free agents invited to training camp is Ennismore’s Jacob Hearne.

The goalie is a graduate of the Peterborough minor hockey system who played last year for the GOJHL’s Fort Erie Meteors. He attended the Kitchener Rangers training camp last year.
