Graham opposing Cathcart bid

- JOELLE KOVACH Examiner Staff Writer joelle.kovach @peterboroughdaily.com

When Matthew Graham moved back to his hometown of Millbrook recently from Toronto, he wasn’t planning to run for office.

But Graham, 35, had lobbied for a new arena/community centre in Millbrook even while he was still living in Toronto.

And when he moved back lately, he wondered how he could continue to make a difference in the community. That’s when he was asked by a few key people to run for council.

Now he’s a candidate for deputy mayor, running against former Cavan Monaghan reeve and

county warden Neal Cathcart.

For eight years prior to moving back to Millbrook, Graham had worked in advertising sales for Metroland Media in Toronto.

He hadn’t planned his next career move in Millbrook yet; he moved because he wanted to get back to his roots.

“I made a life decision: I wanted my future to be here,” he said.

Although he describes himself as a “political rookie,” Graham holds a political science degree from the University of Guelph.

Meanwhile the current Deputy Mayor, John Fallis, is running for a council seat in Cavan Ward against Cathy Moore.

Incumbent Coun. Jordan Landry is not running for re-election, in Cavan Ward.

There’s also a race for mayor: incumbent Scott McFadden will run against Jim Chaplin in the Oct. 22 municipal election.

Coun. Ryan Huntley was acclaimed for Millbrook Ward, and Coun. Tim Belch was acclaimed for North Monaghan Ward.
