Loblaws to begin carrying Nicecream from Chimp Treats

Peterborough company’s frozen fruit dessert to start appearing on shelves on Wednesday

- LANCE ANDERSON

A Peterborough-based health food business has landed a deal with Loblaws, which will see the product on store shelves starting Wednesday.

Chimp Treats will have its frozen fruit product, Nicecream, provided in select Loblaws in the GTA, Ottawa, London and Barrie.

The next wave of locations will be in Québec in Loblaws’ Provigo Le Marché stores.

Company founder and CEO Brooke Hammer, 23, launched Nicecream in 2017 and has since expanded coast-to-coast with niche retailers such as Whole Foods Market and Healthy Planet.

After a year on the market, Chimp Treats is already gaining mainstream success, standing as one of the fastest growing natural food brands in Canada.

While attending Trent University, Hammer developed an innovative manufacturing process that allowed her to create the fruit-only frozen dessert on a large-scale, commercial basis. Since entering the market, Hammer has continued to reach new stores and locations along with growing her team.

“It is an incredible time for innovative, startup companies in the consumer packaged goods space,” Hammer stated in a release.

“Companies like Loblaws are open to bringing in more innovative products by small brands to meet consumer demand as steps are taken away from the big food and beverage giants, toward smaller brands whose values align more clearly with consumers.” Chimp Treats has gained a large social media following for their promotions on healthy living through recipes, tips and more related to its innovative products. Hammer will attend each Loblaws store to speak directly with consumers.

“The best thing about Nicecream’s nutritional profile is that

we don’t add or remove anything — it’s naturally 50 to 60 calories, fat-free, and packed with nutrients from the fresh fruits we use,” Hammer stated.

“Shoppers are always excited about Nicecream’s ingredient list and sweet, refreshing taste. That’s why I love working our sampling events — I get to share our story and personally connect with shoppers over a superhealthy, delicious snack.”

Chimp Treats aims to continue adding new locations in waves until they reach all Loblaws stores across Canada in May.

The company is now using a manufacturer in St. Thomas, Ont. in southwestern Ontario to keep up with the demand after previously using a facility in Colborne in Northumberland County.
