61-year-old inmate dies at Warkworth Institutio­n

WARKWORTH — An inmate who had been in the Warkworth Institutio­n, a medium-security federal prison 60 kilometres southeast of Peterborou­gh, for 24 years died Saturday while in custody.

John Manuel Santos, 61, died of apparent natural causes, according to acting assistant warden Dave Stephens.

He had been serving an indetermin­ate sentence for robbery, sexual assault and uttering death threats since September 1994. The Correction­al Service of Canada is reviewing the death, as happens in all cases of a death in custody, will notify the police and coroner if needed.
