61-year-old inmate dies at Warkworth Institution
WARKWORTH — An inmate who had been in the Warkworth Institution, a medium-security federal prison 60 kilometres southeast of Peterborough, for 24 years died Saturday while in custody.
John Manuel Santos, 61, died of apparent natural causes, according to acting assistant warden Dave Stephens.
He had been serving an indeterminate sentence for robbery, sexual assault and uttering death threats since September 1994. The Correctional Service of Canada is reviewing the death, as happens in all cases of a death in custody, will notify the police and coroner if needed.
