Reader concerned with past actions by council

-

To all candidates running for council: There are two items that will require action to be taken against members of council.

First, the spending of millions on an OHL-type arena to be used by a pro hockey team. The use of all this money on something that is not city business. The citizens have spoken on this: 3,000 might go to an OHL game, while 80,000 would not.

This has been going on for years, wasting city tax money on costs of repair, etc.

The city has all the arenas it requires. The business of trying to make hockey players is a waste and should be stopped. It caters to small percentage of taxpayers. If the parents want it they should be prepared to foot the bill themselves. It would be wise for existing council members to get legal advice on the matter. I would recommend a glass action be gaken against the city because arenas are not a duty of the city.

Millions for something that is not for taxpayers, and nothing for Brock Mission, with council waiting instead of going ahead and providing housing. Doug Ford would agree with me. I will be sending a request to him for action.

Taxpayers should not have to hire lawyers to get answers from council.

The second item is something I have tried to get answers on but have been ignored.

The problem is the donating of money to charities and groups that I do not want to support, deciding how much I should pay, and if I fail to pay threaten me by charging me a penalty for not paying.

I would request that a legal opinion by your lawyers should be obtained. This report should be made available to all taxpayers so that a class action could be started.

This also involves the use of elected office as a means of enforcing this.

I believe that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects me from your actions.

Now that I have a lit of all people running I will be contacting those that are seeing to replace existing councillors, as nothing can protect existing members for their past actions. G.L. Gilders, Peterborough
