Building a healthy breakfast bowl
It’s a gluten-free start to your day
Breakfast bowls are such a nutritious way to start the day, especially now that our mornings are focused on getting kids out the door to school. My kids won’t eat a breakfast bowl, but I do add some of the ingredients to their cereal. We like to meet in the middle.
I like making a breakfast bowl because I can throw together a really healthy and nutritious breakfast in about 5 minutes. I can even do some of the prep the night before if I have a busier than usual morning.
Healthy fats are an important part of breakfast. Not only do they keep you feeling full longer, but they also fuel you for school, work, and whatever morning activities you have planned. Healthy fats are essential for the brain, they can also help lower bad cholesterol, and they’re important for healthy hair, skin, and nails.
This recipe for building a breakfast bowl has lots of room for healthy fats. I like to switch up the ingredients in my Breakfast Bowls, but here’s some ideas for you to create your own:
• Step One – Start with 1/4 cup of any combination of the following: chopped raw walnuts, chopped raw cashews, chopped raw almonds, gluten-free rolled oats, hemp hearts, raw pumpkin seeds, raw sunflower seeds, ground flax or chia seeds.
• Step Two – Add a tablespoon of yogurt/kefir or coconut kefir.
• Step Three – Add a tablespoon of your favorite nut or seed butter.
• Step Four – Add enough milk to cover (I like unsweetened dairyfree milk).
• Step Five – Add chopped fruit (Niagara peaches are my favorite right now).
• Step Six – Sprinkle with cinnamon.
• Step Seven – Enjoy!
The nice thing about this informal recipe is you can switch it up every day, and you can take it on the go with you. If you are used to a sweeter breakfast, add a drizzle of local honey or maple syrup. I find the fresh fruit and the cinnamon are all the sweetness I need.
I’m hosting a Fall Reset and it starts Sunday. Join us by emailing maggiesavage@me.com . I’ll send you the cost and some details explaining how we’re going to reset our health in time for cold and flu season. This breakfast bowl is an example of one of the breakfasts you can enjoy while doing the reset.
