One of the more frequent questions asked at the Mann Cup has been, what is a Burrard?

The Maple Ridge Burrards are named after the Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver. Burrard Inlet was named in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver in honour of his friend and former shipmate Captain (and later Admiral) Sir Harry Burrard.

Maple Ridge is a cluster of communities, population just over 82,000, located in the northern end of Greater Vancouver.

The Burrards name was originally given to the team in 1937 when they were located in Vancouver and known as the Vancouver Burrards until 1993. The team moved to Surrey for the 1994 and ’95 seasons before moving to their current home in 1996.

The Lakers and Burrards franchises have met twice before for the Mann Cup.

Peterborough was known as the Pepsi Petes when they downed the Vancouver Carlings (the Burrards’ name from 195969) four games to one in 1966. In 1973 they met in one of the four one-game Mann Cup finals in the trophy’s history. The Petes had become the Lakers by then, and the Carlings had become the Vancouver Burrards. Peterborough won the game 9-5.

O’Toole time

Otonabee native and TSN personality Dan O’Toole performed the ceremonial ball drop prior to Game 3 on Monday night.

It also happened to be O’Toole’s birthday. He turned 43.

Roster notes

The Lakers dressed the same lineup for a third game in a row with Evan Kirk starting in goal as he rotates with Matt Vinc. The Burrards made two lineup changes reinserting Jeff Cornwall and Mitch McDole and scratching Aaron Davis and Chase McIntyre.
