No Mann Cup in Ontario in 32 years for WLA

- MIKE DAVIES Examiner Sports Director

The Western Lacrosse Association hasn’t won a Mann Cup in Ontario in 32 years.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies were the last WLA team to win in Ontario in 1986 when they beat the Brooklin Redmen.

By comparison, the Major Series Lacrosse champion has won the Mann Cup in five of their last six trips to B.C. since the Lakers snapped a 12-year drought in 2007 when they beat the Coquitlam Adanacs.

Entering this year’s series the MSL champion had won 11 of the last 12 Mann Cups with only the Victoria Shamrocks in 2015 breaking that string.

The last time a team swept a Mann Cup series was the Brampton Excelsiors in 2008 when they beat the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

Father-Son record

Shawn Evans tied a Mann Cup record for most assists in one game with his eight helpers in Game 3 on Monday night.

His father Paul Evans is one of four men Shawn tied.

Paul Evans had eight assists on Sept. 11, 1978. Others to do it include Pat Differ (1977), Dan Wilson (1979) and Ivan Thompson (1979).

The record for most goals (12) and points (16) were set by Alfie Davy on Sept. 27, 1934.

Matt Vinc’s remarkable one-goal against performance in Game 2 on Saturday was not a Mann Cup record for fewest goals against in a game.

Vancouver Carlings goalie Dan Hamilton pitched the only shutout in Mann Cup history in 1962.

Hall Of Famer

Lakers executive Mark Vitarelli performed the ceremonial faceoff. The former Lakers player and coach will be inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a builder in November.

Roster notes

The Lakers floored the exact same lineup four straight games. Maple Ridge made one change inserting Adam Dickson and removing Mitch McDole.
