Midget AA Ice Kats face American teams at tourney

The Peterborou­gh Midget AA Ice Kats participat­ed in the 64-team Stoney Creek Midget AA Showcase Tournament over the weekend against five American teams to start their season.

The Ice Kats dropped their opener Friday morning to the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals 2-1. Hannah Kawalec scored from Jilly MacIver.

McIver’s goal with 37 seconds left gave Peterborou­gh a 1-1 tie with Team Illinois in Game 2. Sophy Wood was strong in goal while Sydney Paulson and Alicia Wake added assists.

Peterborou­gh beat the Chicago Young Americans 1-0 on Saturday morning. MacIver scored assisted by Kawalec and Paulson. Goaltender Maddy Roche registered the shutout.

They then lost 4-1 to Chicago Mission. Paulson scored from Maddy O’Neill-Hawthorne.

Peterborou­gh completed the tourney Sunday morning, losing 2-0 to the Minnesota Blades.

“We had the rare opportunit­y to play state teams from large American cities,” said coach Mark McArthur.

“The girls played hard and it has given us a good picture of what we need to improve on as we move toward.”

The Midget AA Ice Kats visit the Kingston Ice Wolves in exhibition play Friday night.
