Video from stabbing scene shown in court

An emotional Thomas Chan buried his head and covered his ears as court viewed unsettling video of the morning Dr. Andrew Chan and Lynn Witteveen were stabbed inside Dr. Chan’s Peterborough house.

Thomas Chan, 21, is accused of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his father, Dr. Chan, and attempted murder of Dr. Chan’s partner, Lynn Witteveen, on Dec. 28, 2015.

Chan has pleaded not guilty. The judge alone trial began on Monday and is being heard by Justice Cary Boswell.

A visibly disturbed courtroom could hear guttural yells coming from the accused in the video, which was captured on a nanny cam inside the Peterborough gastroenterologist’s Haggis Drive home.

A short clip showed a physical altercation between father and son.

“I love you all so much. I don’t want to do this,” Chan said, pacing in the front hallway while wielding a knife.

“This is a holy place,” he added, shortly before placing the knife down and unlocking the door for city police officers who were trying to gain entry into the home.

The court heard Chan say, “This is God’s place. You are the devil. You are the devil,” as police tried to detain him.

City police Const. Kyle Adey recalled Chan resisting arrest and being quite strong.

“He wasn’t going on his own free will,” Adey explained.

The officer recalled Chan yelling, “I am God. I will do it again. Put a bullet in my head,” while being apprehended by police.

Inside the home, Adey remembers going into the master bedroom where detective constable Ian Maxwell was preforming first aid on Witteveen who was laying in a pool of blood on her bed.

“He had his fingers in the female’s neck trying to stop the bleeding,” Adey told the court.

Maxwell remembered walking into the house and seeing broken glass in the front hallway, and blood on the floors and the wall. The officer testified Dr. Chan was grey and blue, and had no pulse.

“There was no point in staying there,” he said, noting that he moved his attention to the master bedroom.

Maxwell said Witteveen was unresponsive at first.

“She gasped, and that’s when I knew she was alive,” an emotional Maxwell said, adding he used his hands to stop the blood from squirting out of her neck.

Det. Const. Kyle Kelly was the third officer to take the stand on Friday. He was one of the first officers on the scene at 3:44 a.m. Upon approaching the scene, he testified he could hear screaming and a male voice getting louder and louder.

He observed Chan inside the house holding a knife. He pulled out his taser while his partner pulled out his gun. They both attempted to kick in the door. Within minutes, Chan opened the door with his hands up and fell to his knees.

“He was covered in blood,” Kelly testified, adding Chan made comments about “God’s will” during the arrest.

Kelly described the scene to the court with the assistance of photos taken by city police. The images showed a smashed front foyer window, blood throughout the hallway, bed sheets covered in blood, and three knives with blood on them.

“You can see a blood trail. It’s leading to the master bedroom,” he explained.

Witteveen is expected to testify Monday.
