Ten days of arts-related events and activities around the city

- NAOMI STOCK naomi.stock@gmail.com

Artsweek, Peterborough’s biennial festival of the arts, begins Friday and runs until Sept 30. It offers 10 days of artistic adventures in music, visual arts, writing, theatre, dance, media arts and performances of all kinds throughout the city and all events are free. The theme of this year’s Artsweek is Art in Unexpected Places. Opening ceremonies take place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St., and feature the world premiere of Imaginarium, a film by award-winning filmmaker Lester Alphonso. Imaginarium is a giant film projection that emanates from inside the windows of the library and explores the idea of dreams and visions captured by books on library shelves. Opening ceremonies also include an official Artsweek Proclamation, opening remarks, and a sneak peak at Artsweek highlights and artists. Refreshments will be provided.

Throughout the festival, many Artsweek events are taking place in the Town Ward. Divergent Dances features local dance artists Erin Ball, Opal Elchuk, Nikola Steer, and Thomas Vaccaro, and is an aerial performance and dance-work on the exterior walls and stairways of Peterborough Square, at George and Simcoe Streets. Open rehearsals take place Sept. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and performances are scheduled for Sept. 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. and Sept. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Porchapalooza, produced by local musicians Washboard Hank and Kris Fisher, is a neighbourhood concert series that transforms porches in historic Peterborough neighbourhoods into stages for live, local music. Porchapalooza takes place in the Avenues neighbourhood Sept. 22 beginning at 2 p.m. Porchapalooza also takes places in East City on Sept. 23 beginning at 2 p.m.

Artists Jeffrey Macklin and Carl Baker present Roll-O-Matic and bring lino-block printmaking to the streets. Audiences are invited to join in the fun and create large prints using a heavy, hand-operated, water-filled lawn roller. Public Acts of Printmaking are scheduled at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, 250 Crescent St., on Sept. 22 from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. and at the Silver Bean Café in Millennium Park on Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Other Artsweek events in the Town Ward include Take-Out Poetry Cart, Cognitively Nuanced, Sorry About What Happened at the Mall, Between the Lines and Tootah in Town.

Artsweek is produced and presented by Electric City Culture Council. For more information, including a complete list of Artsweek events, please visit www.artsweekptbo.com.
