SIU probing man’s death in river in Lindsay
LINDSAY — The Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man’s body was pulled from the Scugog River in Lindsay on Monday afternoon.
The man had entered the river on Sunday night and disappeared, police said, after City of Kawartha Lakes Police went looking for him.
The Ontario Provincial Police Underwater Search and Recovery Unit recovered his body at 3:20 p.m.
The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service was contacted at 6:31 p.m. Sunday by a witness who was concerned about a man in the area of William Street north in Lindsay, police said.
When officers arrived to investigate they located a man who immediately fled north along a walking path that runs parallel to the Scugog River, police said.
Officers lost sight of the man as he fled, police said, but witnesses saw the man enter the Scugog River near the area of Colborne Street West.
Officers were not able to determine at the time if the man made his way out of the river, police said, and a search for the man was launched on the east and west river banks.
The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service marine unit assisted with search, but he was not found Sunday night and the search resumed Monday.
Because the SIU is now conducting an investigation, the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service is not releasing any further details.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
There was no immediate word from the SIU on details about their investigation.
