LAKEFIELD — One of Lakefield’s best kept secrets kicks off Friday.

The Performing Arts Lakefield (PAL) 2018-19 concert series launches with a concert Friday night.

It has five performances this season, the last one is April 21.

Musical styles range from jazz to classical and blues to contemporary.

The concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. at Lakefield College School’s Bryan Jones Theatre.

On the roster this year is Ensemble Vivant with Perry White and Kevin Turcotte, Okan, Viva, Lemon Bucket Orchestra, and Robi Botos, Paul Novotny and Daniel Barnes.

The series is in its 37th year, but it’s not as well-known as you might think.

“It’s a wonderful kept secret,” said Melanie Allen, PAL board member.

Allen is one of eight board members for the non-profit organization.

PAL came together in 1981 when a group of Lakefield residents wanted to see more arts brought to Lakefield.

They managed to scoop up performers on Sundays after they’d played in Toronto the night before.

“They’d perform at Roy Thomson Hall on a Saturday night for about $100, then they’d come to Lakefield and you could hear them for $35,” said Allen.

PAL hosts about five concerts a year, but they’ve moved to Friday nights (with exception to the March 2 show this year).

“It’s every six to eight weeks all winter and it’s something to look forward to.”

Ensemble Vivant with special guests trumpeter Perry White and saxophonist Kevin Turcotte start off the season on Sept. 21.

They’re pioneers in the piano chamber music world, Allen said. The group performs music from classical to jazz, with their own interpretations.

While the concert series once had a wait list for tickets, it’s popularity has quieted down a bit over the years.

That makes it a secret, but the board would prefer it wasn’t, Allen said.

“We wish it wasn’t so much of a secret because we’d love to fill every seat, every concert.”

For all five concerts, it’s $140 for adults and $45 for students. Single tickets are $35 or $10 for students. Tickets are available online at performingartslakefield.org, by calling 705-652-3703, or at the door.
