Karl Battle will stay in jail another couple of months for stealing a woman’s purse in downtown Peterborough in June.

Battle, 33, pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 70 days behind bars by Justice Jennifer Broderick in Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 6.

Battle has been in custody since his arrest on June 27 and was credited with 180 days of pre-sentence custody. He was also given 12 months of probation and a 30-day concurrent sentence on an unrelated theft under $5,000 charge.

According to city police, Battle snatched a handbag from a woman near Charlotte Mews in the downtown area on June 22. Police were called in and officers found the stolen purse and wallet discarded in the area, but some cash and a cellphone had been stolen.

Police release surveillance camera images of the suspect.

The suspect was later identified as Battle and he was arrested four days later in the area of Park and Simcoe streets.
