Kawartha Downs race named for schoolgirl

FRASERVILL­E — A Bowmanvill­e schoolgirl will be honoured with a race in her name and a blanket presentati­on at Saturday night’s final Kawartha Downs racing card of the season.

Avery Kirkpatric­k, 11, is a student at St. Joseph School in Bowmanvill­e and is one of three provincial essay derby finalists in the 2018 Youth Literary Derby, a horse-themed writing contest sponsored by the province’s horse racing industry and offering $2,000 in prize money.

The first, second and third place winners in the essay and poetry categories will be announced

Oct. 6 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
