John Parker-Jones had surgery on Wednesday to repair a broken finger suffered Sunday when he blocked a shot late in the third period against Ottawa.

Parker-Jones had been one of the feelgood stories of the early season earning a spot in a top two defensive pairing after playing most of last year as fourth-line forward.

Petes GM Mike Oke said there is no clear timeline for ParkerJones’ return.

“He’ll be re-evaluated in two weeks to see where he’s at,” said Oke.

Petes’ head coach Rob Wilson said it was unfortunate for Parker-Jones.

“He was doing a great job,’ said Wilson. “It will give a younger guy more ice-time. Guys have to step up and take their opportunities when they get them. This is an opportunity for somebody now to fill that void.”

Nick Robertson is also expected to miss seven to 10 days with strained tendons in his wrist. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev

played his first game of the season after returning from Toronto Maple Leafs’ camp Wednesday.

Scratched for the Petes were rookies Dustin Hutton and Shawn Spearing.

Honourable mention

The Petes 2-0 start earned them an honourable mention in the first week of the CHL Top 10 rankings.

Their 7-3 win over Ottawa knocked the 67’s out of the top 10. Three OHL teams are in the rankings including the London Knights (2), Niagara IceDogs (5) and Saginaw Spirit (9). The QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads are rated No. 1.

Dunrobin Strong

Petes goaltender Tye Austin is asking fans to take part in a chuck-a-puck at Saturday’s game against Hamilton with the proceeds to be donated to relief efforts in his hometown of Dunrobin. The funds will be presented to the Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group, owners of the Ottawa 67’s, who started a campaign to assist families affected by last week’s tornados in the OttawaHull region. Austin was born in Pembroke but now lives in Dunrobin.
