Local artisans navigating river themes

New works will be exhibited at the ARTISANity Show in November

- JOANNE CULLEY Joanne.culley@sympatico.ca

Inspired by the Otonabee River, the Artisans Centre Peterborough’s board is challenging all members to express the theme of “river” in a unique piece of work.

“This is a fun competition to see how our members can express a common idea using their own medium of wood, pottery, fibre or gourd,” says Anne Carling, spokesperson. “The challenge is to make those looking at a handmade item see a river or part of a river. It can be abstract, realistic, or symbolic, in the artisan’s choice of materials, in any size or shape.”

The submitted pieces will be on display at the upcoming ARTISANity Show, taking place on Nov. 2, 3, and 4, at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

At that time the public will pick the winner by voting for the piece that most makes them think “river.” The board is seeking sponsorship with donations or prizes for the first, second and third place.

“It will be exciting to see how the artisans express the same theme in different media. How will a fabric artist or potter use their skills compared to a wood turner or gourd artist to express the river?” continues Carling.

The Artisans Centre Peterborough is a place where people can share, learn, and teach their craft. To view their classes in woodturning, fibre, gourd art and pottery or to register, please go to www.artisanscentre.ca.
