This year’s Parkinson SuperWalk, held Sept. 8 at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School, raised an amazing amount -- just over $50,000, thanks to the efforts of Lanny and Nancy Thomas, Joe van Kouverden, over 40 volunteers and more than 100 walkers. The funds will go towards Parkinson research and support services.

Members of the Peterborough Movers and Shakers team raised $27,418 to finish in third place in Canada. Vivian Heinmiller was the top local walker raising $8,400.

Other “SuperWalkers" who raised more than $1,000 each included John Carley, Wade Cook, Gregg Endicott, Catherine Heinmiller, Rene Lamontagne, Margaret Pearson, Cheryl Peck, Linda Slavin, Ann Thibodeau, Lanny Thomas, and Joe Van Koeverden.

The Peterborough/Kawartha Lakes Chapter of Parkinson Canada has participated in Parkinson SuperWalk for 23 years and has raised over $600,000 for research, advocacy, education and support since in that time,” says chapter member Vivien Heinmiller.

Members of Peterborough Taoist Tai Chi Chapter formed a team for the walk and did a Tai Chi demonstration during registration while the team from Active Living ran a warmup for the walkers before the event.

The morning also included face painting, a silent auction, draw prizes and lunch following the walk.

Organizers would like to thank the sponsors who also helped make the day such a success.

“We are grateful for the support of sponsors of the Walk including Active Living, Dr. ED’s Gentle Chiropractic, Endicott Fuels, Extendicare Canada, Ed Lacey Wealth Management Specialist of Investors Group, The King Street Market, The Lions Club of Peterborough, Peterborough Volkswagen, Ricart Inc., and media sponsors CHEX Peterborough, FreshRadio 100.5 and The WOLF 101.5FM,” said Heinmiller.
