Peterborough County OPP officer charged after SIU investigation into Hwy. 7 collision
A Peterborough County OPP police officer has been charged in connection with a serious crash east of Peterborough in February after a Special Investigations Unit investigation.
The SIU says the T-bone crash on Highway 7, just east of the city near Leanne Avenue in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township, around 5:30 p.m. Feb. 6 took place while the officer was en route to a call.
The officer’s cruiser collided with another vehicle driven by a 46-year-old man.
Vehicles had pulled over to the shoulder to allow the ambulance to pass, according to the SIU, but one of the cars pulled back into the lane after the ambulance had passed and then collided with the cruiser.
The car landed in the ditch in the north side, while the OPP cruiser landed in the ditch on the south side, with front end damage.
The man was seriously injured in the crash and was taken by Ornge air ambulance in critical condition to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto for treatment.
Highway 7 was closed in both directions between Highway 28/Heritage Line and Providence Line for 12 hours for the investigation.
Ontario Provincial Police Const. Miriam Green is now facing one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Green was also taken by paramedics to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment following the collision.
The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates incidents involving police in which someone is killed, seriously injured or accused of sexual assault.
