Astronomy

The Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) meets Friday at 7:00 p.m. the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park and Zoo.

Novice Astronomy Classes take place prior to the main presentation. Those interested should be there at 6 p.m. for these 45-minute classes that introduce astronomy equipment, software and other astronomy related subjects. Participants will have hands-on time with equipment; learn to locate constellations, stars, planets and other objects in the sky; and have access to a selfpaced course, Viewing the Moon.

The main presentation beginning at 7 p.m., features club member and PAA Webmaster, Boyd Wood discussing how he made a homemade radio telescope. Wood’s interest in building his own radio telescope was piqued after attending a PAA presentation last year by Dr. Julie Banfield from the Australian National University who spoke on her research using radio telescopes.

Following the presentation, the Sky This Month portion of the meeting will help those attending to learn about the locations of the planets of the solar system.

Come out and check out the PAA and all it has to offer, at no cost. This is an all ages meeting in a barrier free venue. New members are always welcome, and you don’t need a telescope to join.
