New life for old home movies

- KAILEIGH HOWARD

Many memories are stored on VHS tapes, but changing times and changing technology means those memories may be inaccessible to their owners.

This can lead to boxes of tapes in attics or basements, where they are forgotten.

Trent Valley Archives, Traill College and the cultural studies department at Trent University are seeking to change that.

The second annual Home Movie Day will provide an opportunity for those who haven’t had a chance to see their home movies in years to watch them. The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at Traill College’s Bagnani Hall on Oct. 20. Home movies from all over Peterborough will be screened.

Those who want to submit a film must stop by Trent Valley Archives, to sign a waiver and drop off their film for inspection, by Oct. 18. Everyone who submits a home movie is encouraged to provide live narration when it is screened, explaining to other attendees what’s going on and any background to it.

Those who don’t have films to submit are welcome. The event is aimed not only at helping those who haven’t seen their movies, but to discuss the preservation and significance of home movies. Popcorn will be provided.

Those interested can go online can call Heather at 705-745-4404, or email admin@trentvalleyarachives.com. The event is free, but attendees are asked to RSVP.
