Muskies Canada supports Wounded Warriors program

- MARLYS KERKMAN kerkmam@gmail.com

Muskies Canada is an angling group. Their motto is “Let them go – Let them grow.” While their goals are conservation, education and wise management of the muskellunge they also have a strong social responsibility and the will to give back.

Wounded Warriors Canada honours and supports Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, first responders and their families. Recently at Scotsman Point Wounded Warriors and Muskies Canada came together. Muskies Canada saw an opportunity to take these warriors fishing.

They brought together the warriors with boats, fishing poles, reels and bait and, hopefully, fish. On Friday, September 28 they got to know each other. Drumming played a part. Dinner was provided after the drumming and smores around the bonfire later in the evening.

Saturday fishing happened. There was also Kelly Dodge, local artist, leading an art activity. Bretton Clark of the Land Canadian Adventures took the vets on a foraging trip looking for plants that aid in healing. Leslie Clarkson, Scotsman Point Resort manager, packed lunches for participants.

Chris Nielsen, president of Muskies Canada, said that many members of Muskies Canada are ex-military. Nielsen said that Muskies Canada said that with the cooperation of Scotsman Point there was an opportunity to give something back. That happened!

Greg Jackson

Greg Jackson is a candidate for the position of councillor at large in Trent Lakes. He has been a custom home builder for 45 years, a Scout leader for many years, coached both hockey and baseball and was a member of his church Board.

He has never been a member of council but he says that he has “10 years’ experience living with politics and I know how the system works.”

Over the next four years he would like to see council become more efficient and accountable in the spending of tax dollars. Jackson believes that there should be more attention to roads and equipment that sits idle. He calls for meetings with quarry owners to improve community relations. He also believes in fostering opportunities for tourism in the entire municipality. He would support easier transfer station access for property owners and a return to a year round card. Improved relationships with the three community halls and the ratepayers association is another of his goals.

He states,”Even though the province governs us, we can change. Let me be your voice!”
