VandenBroe­k wins pair of heats

Peterborou­gh’s Grace VandenBroe­k won a pair of heats in the Youth Olympic Games junior women’s single sculls rowing regatta in Argentina on Monday.

VandenBroe­k, 18, is seeded third heading into Tuesday’s quarter-finals. She won her first heat against rowers from Switzerlan­d, Spain and Zimbabwe. She followed that up with a second win against competitor­s from Uzbekistan, Ireland and Chinese Taipei.

VandenBroe­k, a first-year student at

Trent University, placed eighth in Sunday’s time trials which seeded the 24 racers for the heats.

She is the lone rower on Canada’s Youth Olympic Games team of 71 athletes competing in 37 sports.
