Value of marriage should be taught in schools
Andrea Mrozek makes a good point that you can’t very well discuss the topic of healthy relationships with our children and youth without mentioning marriage (How can we discuss sex ed without talking about marriage? Sept. 28).
As she states, marriage isn’t for everyone. People can live fulfilled lives in other ways. However, both the old and new versions of the sex-ed curriculum mention a lot of things but do not even mention the word marriage even though marriage is a significant social institution. Teaching marriage belongs as one logical continuation of any discussion of love and relationships, but, as pointed out, we are cutting the conversation short to the detriment of the students we care about.
Her article is a balanced and thoughtful commentary that belongs in the educational line-up of connection, sexuality, stability, attachment, love and family.
