Elder presents book on First Nation history
Doug Williams’ new book is Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg: This Is Our Territory
The Peterborough Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society presents Gidigaa Migizi (Doug Williams) speaking about his new book, Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg: This Is Our Territory, a series of stories from the oral traditioin told by Williams in his own words, on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Gzowski College, Room GCS 115, Trent University.
In his book, Williams shares the history of the Michi Saagiig, discussing origin stories, alliances, diplomacy, resistance and relations to the lands and waters in their homeland.
This book is the culmination of a life-long goal to put the history of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg on paper, states a description on the book’s cover.
Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, in her introduction to the book, describes Williams as “a widely respected elder, historian, hunter, fisher, ceremonial leader, language keeper and story teller, past Chief and at times an activist…These stories are more than just a chronicle of oral history. They document Michi Saagiiig Nishnaabeg as provocateurs, strategists, connectors, agitators and intellectuals. They show that resistance and resurgence have always been part of us.”
This presentation is part of the Peterborough Chapter’s monthly Public Speakers Series, conducted with the support of the City of Peterborough and the Trent University Archaeological Research Centre. Members of the public are invited to attend. There is no charge. Light refreshments are served. For further information please contact the chapter’s secretary, Dirk Verhulst, at dverhulst@cogeco.ca.
