Ed Arnold to launch new crime book Saturday

Author says it’s important to remember victims of past crime in Peterborough

Local author Ed Arnold will launch his latest book near the scene of the crime — one of the crimes documented in Inside Peterborough: Three Murder Stories.

Arnold will meet readers and discuss his work Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Champs Sports Bar, located close to what was the scene of the killing of an OPP officer in 1928.

“Chuck Russelle of Champs agreed to help launch the book somewhere close to the scene,” Arnold stated in a press release.

“People need to remember this policeman and we fear he has been forgotten. He is the only officer to be murdered in the line of duty in Peterborough’s history and yet there is no street, park, named after him. It’s important that people remember Const. Norman Maker and other victims, thus the book.”

Other stories in the book include the tale of a death near Warsaw that led to Peterborough’s last hanging and an Otonabee Township murder that set a legal precedent.

The book, Arnold’s 19th, is 260 pages and will cost $25. It was created with the assistance of benefactor Bob Russelle and Russelle Toyota, and will be a limited edition with no reprints.

It can be purchased at The Peterborough Examiner office at 60 Hunter St. E. ($5 of every book goes to Camp Kawartha’s Branching Out Campaign so more children can experience the outdoors), Happenstance Books in Lakefield, Trent Valley Archives on Carnegie Avenue, the Keene Public Library and the Warsaw municipal building ($5 for every book purchased at Warsaw and Keene will go toward the library’s children’s program).

The book can also be ordered directly through Arnold at edarnold29@gmail.com, which will see part of the proceeds also donated to Camp Kawartha’s Branching Out Campaign.

Learn more about it at the Camp Kawartha website, campkawartha.ca.
