Election should be about more than economy, jobs
I was concerned to see a large ad about the municipal election in The Examiner recently. Sponsored by a local real estate firm, it said the important issues were jobs and the economy, and gave a list of candidates they wanted people to support. I found it insulting that this ad inferred people were too stupid to make their own choices.
While jobs and the economy certainly are important, there are other equally important issues I would like to see our city council address. Protection of the environment and Peterborough's valuable green spaces will be critical. If you don't have a healthy environment, you don't have a healthy economy, or good quality of life.
Careful planning of new residential development, so that stores, restaurants and other services are close by also will be important. Sensible plans for transportation that consider the environment, as well as well as all the other factors like health care, housing and the arts that contribute to making Peterborough such a great city deserve as much attention as jobs and the economy.
Narrow thinking that looks only at jobs and the economy is definitely not what Peterborough needs right now. Please also consider the candidates' stand on environmental, social, health and culture matters when you vote. Merilyn Twiss, Wildlark Drive
