Pet-Friendly Garden Homes

- By Joanne Culley

Joanne Heather loves having her cat Chloe living with her in her Garden Home at Canterbury Gardens Retirement Residence, 1414 Sherbrooke St.in Peterborough.

“Chloe is friendly, and has been very adaptable, I think partly due to the fact that she was a stray,” says Joanne, a resident at Canterbury Gardens for four years.

Joanne explains that she always had dogs, but when her daughter and son-in-law, who own a veterinary clinic in Bobcaygeon, received a stray, pregnant cat, she was asked to take the mother cat in “on consignment” – and it has worked out perfectly.

Chloe doesn’t go outside, but stays inside the Garden Home, which is connected to the main building through a hallway. Chloe doesn’t mind being on a leash, so Joanne will take her into the central atrium where other residents enjoy petting her.

“The other residents like coming over to pet and hug her – Chloe acts like she owns the place!” laughs Joanne. “On the weekends, there are many visiting dogs and cats who make everyone smile.”

Joanne says that there are a few other cats in the building, including two in the enriched care wing, as well as a small dog.

“Down at the end of the hall from me, there is a little Yorkie dog named Jenny who plays outside on the grass and goes for walks in the wooded area nearby the residence,” says Joanne.

“At The Gardens of Peterborough we recognize how important it is for the well-being and happiness of our residents for them to bring their pets to their new home,” says Sarah Beaudoin, Manager of Resident Services. “We have a pet-friendly policy at all of our locations, so both residents and their pets will find their new home as comfortable as possible.”

Garden Homes are the retirement alternative with maximum independence and privacy, while still providing security and access to Care Services should the need arise. Located at both Canterbury Gardens and Royal Gardens, the homes are countrystyle attached bungalows, nestled among landscaped gardens. They are available in spacious one and two-bedroom designs that are perfect for today’s active older adult. They are often the lifestyle of choice for couples or people with pets.

The Garden Home lifestyle includes a delicious meal each day and weekly housekeeping with linen and towel service. Washers and dryers are provided in each suite, allowing residents the option of doing their own personal laundry or arranging for Gardens’ staff to provide this service. Each Garden Home has its own individually controlled furnace and air-conditioning units.

The Garden Homes have full kitchens with spacious cupboards, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and stove, so that residents can prepare their favourite foods if they wish. Or they can have their meals just steps away in the main dining room or order them ahead of time and have them delivered right to their door.

Locally owned and operated, The Gardens of Peterborough residences offer trial and short-term stays in a wide range of retirement options. For more information, speak to one of our affordability experts at 705-742-9779, toll free 1-877-742-9779 or visit www.gardensofpeterborough.ca.
