Longtime reeve wraps up 44 years on local council

Dave Nelson has been reeve for 37 years

- PAT MARCHEN KeeneNews@nexicom.net

It is the end of an era for Otonabee-South Monaghan Township as longtime Reeve Dave Nelson retires from municipal politics. The-man-who-would-not-be-mayor (a title reeves in other Peterborough County townships adopted) devoted 44 years to municipal politics, 37 of them as reeve.

He announced earlier this year that he would not be running in Monday’s municipal election.

A retirement open house for Nelson will be held on Dec. 2 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Conservatory at Elmhirst’s Resort.

OSM Lions

The Keene Lions Club has a substantial part in local history, and that will be recognized at the next meeting of the OSM Historical Society. Ted Eason, with the help of Dick Eason and Colleen Bolin, will give a talk on the history of the Keene Lions and their contributions to the community over the last 67 years. The meeting is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Historical Society room of the Gayle Nelson Library in Keene.

Books, books, books

A generous donation of 4,000 books has been made to the OSM Historical Society from the estate of local historian Karen Lunn. Many of them are “coffee table books”, suitable as gifts. There will 25 books about Canada and 75 books about sports available for purchase at the next meeting, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Historical Society room in the Keene library. Come a bit early for first choice.

Diary of a farmer

John Weir was born in 1844 and kept journals from 1880 to 1925. 1920 Oct. 28, Thurs. This forenoon I was raising our beets. This afternoon I helped Mr. Lowes fill his silo with corn. Aleck Huston’s machine did the work. 1923 Oct. 22, Mon. The good weather continues. Ice on the water but not thick. Lovely sunshine everyday and nothing doing. 1923 Oct. 23

The same fine weather continues. Tonight I attended our Orange Lodge to arrange for our fifth of November celebration. I got a ride home in Bro. Ritchie’s car. 1924 Oct. 23, Thurs. This morning I went to the corner of Prince and Aylmer Sts. and voted on the prohibition question for Government control of liquor.
