Norwood’s Marisha Thompson breaks COSSA record

Norwood District High School’s Marisha Thompson broke the COSSA record by 75 seconds in winning the senior girls’ cross country title Wednesday in Bay of Quinte.

Thompson ripped up the sixkilomet­re course in 23:59.67 finishing 1:09.05 ahead of St. Peter’s Audrey McCarthy who finished second in 25:08.72. McCarthy’s teammate Tara Black placed third in 25:39.55 and Crestwood’s Grace DeHaan was fourth in 25:56:01. Thompson’s victory came a week after she was forced to withdraw midway through the Kawartha championsh­ip race.

The top five individual­s and top two teams in each division advance to the OFSAA championsh­ips Nov. 3 in Hamilton.

The St. Peter Saints and Adam Scott Lions senior girls teams finished first and second in the team standings to advance to OFSAA. The Saints team included McCarthy, Black, Brieana Keast (10th), Charlotte Cooke (13th) and Maya Taylor (37th). The Adam Scott team consisted of Allison Westbroeek (11th), Sarah Booth (12th), Frances Emery (16th) and Marissa Booth (17th).

Adam Scott’s Molly Strain won the junior girls 5k race in 19:20.67 finishing 1:07.55 ahead of a Trenton runner.

In the midget girls 3.8k race, Thomas A. Stewart Griffins teammates Anna May (15:41.05) and Nadiya Linde-Elmhirst (15:46.75) finished second and third. May was 4.31 seconds off the leader from Belleville.

In the midget boys 3.8k division, St. Peter’s Jack Ryan placed second, 2.23 seconds behind a Belleville runner, in 14:19.61 and Crestwood’s Jack Workman was fifth in 14:29.32. In the senior boys 6k race Tristen Jones of St. Peter’s finished third.

Boys Soccer

The St. Peter Saints won the Kawartha AAA senior boys soccer championsh­ip with a 1-0 win over the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves on Thursday in Cobourg.

St. Peter defeated the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins 4-2 in semifinal play on Wednesday.

Cobourg’s St. Mary Thunder won the AA title beating the Adam Scott Lions 3-0 in the final at Donegan Park. In semifinal action, Adam Scott beat the Holy Cross Hurricanes 4-2 and St. Mary beat Fenelon Falls 10-0.

The Campbellfo­rd District Flames beat Port Hope 2-0 In the senior A final.

In junior action, Cobourg beat St. Peter’s 2-0 in the AAA final. The Saints beat I.E. Weldon Wildcats 5-2 in semifinal play while CCI beat TASSS 8-0.

St. Mary’s won the AA division crushing an unidentifi­ed opponent 7-0 in the final. Crestwood Mustangs and Lindsay Collegiate Spartans played in the semis.

Football

The Thomas A. Stewart Griffins senior football team clinched first place in the Kawartha high school league with a 50-14 win over the Holy Cross Hurricanes on Thursday at Holy Cross.

The Griffins improved to 5-0 and have one game remaining Friday against the Haliburton Highlands Redhawks at TASSS at 2 p.m.

The Crestwood Mustangs (4-1), who had a bye week, are locked into second place and will finish their season Thursday at home to Holy Cross (2-3) at 4 p.m.

The Adam Scott Lions (3-2) clinched third place following a 47-0 win over the Fenelon Falls Falcons (3-3) on Thursday. The Lions host St. Peter’s Saints 4 p.m. Friday. Haliburton (1-4) beat St. Peter’s (0-5) 28-20 Wednesday.

In junior action, Holy Cross (4-0-1) and St. Peter’s (4-0-1) kept their unbeaten records intact. The Hurricanes beat TASSS (2-3) 25-8 on Thursday and the Saints defeated Haliburton (2-3) 31-7 on Wednesday.

Adam Scott (3-1-1) sits in third place after beating Fenelon Falls (0-6) 48-2. Crestwood (1-3-1) sits in sixth place. Holy Cross visits Crestwood Thursday at 2 p.m. and St. Peter’s visits Adam Scott 2 p.m. Friday. TASSS hosts Haliburton 4 p.m. Friday. The top four senior and junior teams will play in semifinal playoffs on Nov. 6.
