Darling Insurance event raises funds for MS, Fairhaven
Fairhaven Foundation was recently the recipient of a generous donation from Darling Insurance. The MS Society of Canada Peterborough, Kawartha Lake and Haliburton Chapter also shared in this donation.
The funds were raised at the Darling Insurance 21st Annual Charity Golf Tournament held Aug. 30 at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. More than 100 golfers participated in the tournament, raising an impressive $17,537.38.
Astronomy
Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) meets Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services building at Riverview Park and Zoo.
Novice astronomy classes focusing on the practical aspects of learning astronomy begin at 6 p.m. prior to the main meeting. These 45-minute hands-on classes introduce equipment, software and other astronomy related subjects at a very basic level. This month's session presented by Rick Stankiewicz, looks at setting up and using the simplest and most common type of telescope and mount, the Newtonian telescope on an Alt-Az mount. Participants will also learn to locate constellations, stars, planets and other objects in the sky.
The main presentation begins at 7 p.m. and features club members David Mills (President) and Paul Ward, speaking on ‘Deep Sky Objects’. This tour through the universe will focus on celestial objects visible in fall and winter seasons, objects from the Messier and NGC Catalogues.
The Sky This Month follows the main presentation, offering information about the locations of the planets of the solar system.
Community members are invited to come and check out the PAA and all it has to offer at no cost. This is an all ages meeting in a barrier free venue.

Storytellers
As part of Treaties Recognition Week, Why the Land Means so Much to Us: Commemorating Treaty 20, 1818-2018, takes place Friday from 10 a.m. until noon and 1 until 3 p.m. in the Gathering Space, Gzowski College, Trent University. This is a Pine Tree Lecture.
Miichi Saagig storytellers will share stories of the land in the traditional territories of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg. Speakers will include Gidigaa Migizi (Doug Williams), Dorothy Taylor, and Anne Taylor from Curve Lake First Nation.
This event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness 101 will be offered at the Play Café, 809 Chemong Rd, BrookdalePlaza, on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Learn what mindfulness is and how to incorporate it into your family’s daily routine. The class will be taught by Sonja Martin of Rotted Lavender. Martin is a yoga, meditation teacher and behaviourist. No experience is necessary.
