Astronomy

Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) meets Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services building at Riverview Park and Zoo.

Novice astronomy classes focusing on the practical aspects of learning astronomy begin at 6 p.m. prior to the main meeting. These 45-minute hands-on classes introduce equipment, software and other astronomy related subjects at a very basic level. This month's session presented by Rick Stankiewicz, looks at setting up and using the simplest and most common type of telescope and mount, the Newtonian telescope on an Alt-Az mount. Participants will also learn to locate constellations, stars, planets and other objects in the sky.

The main presentation begins at 7 p.m. and features club members David Mills (President) and Paul Ward, speaking on ‘Deep Sky Objects’. This tour through the universe will focus on celestial objects visible in fall and winter seasons, objects from the Messier and NGC Catalogues.

The Sky This Month follows the main presentation, offering information about the locations of the planets of the solar system.

Community members are invited to come and check out the PAA and all it has to offer at no cost. This is an all ages meeting in a barrier free venue.
