Otonabee murder in 1968 focus of new book

- PAT MARCHEN KeeneNews@nexicom.net

The story behind one of Otonabee’s most tragic incidents, the killing of a young man for $55, is one of three murders Ed Arnold explores in his latest book, Inside Peterborough: Three Murder Stories.

Donald Comrie, 20, met a violent end when he was shot with a rifle at the Shell gas station in March, 1968. The long-gone station was on Highway 7 at the 8th Line. Donald worked there on weekends when he came home from his apprenticeship at NCR in Toronto.

A suspect was charged, but was acquitted at the first trial. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Arnold will be signing his book at Keene library on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The 260-page paperback is, $25. A portion of the sales will go to Camp Kawartha’s Branching Out Campaign.

A farmer’s diary

1921 Oct. 31, Mon This afternoon and evening we spent at George Mitchell’s and had a sumptuous supper. Roast goose and all the other rich food usually provided by Mrs. Mitchell. We came home about ten o’clock. We had a very heavy rain this forenoon.
