Epping wins fourth Grand Slam title
Peterborough native John Epping captured the Canadian Beef Masters title with a 7-4 victory over Calgary’s Kevin Koe in Truro, N.S. on Sunday afternoon.
It is Epping’s fourth career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling series championship. It completes a career Grand Slam for the skip having captured all four majors.
It’s also his first major victory since adding former world champions Craig Savill and Brent Laing to his front end this year.
Epping scored two in the third and fifth ends in building a 5-1 lead. Koe closed the gap to 5-4 with two in the sixth and one in the seventh but Epping solidified the win with his patented angle raise to score two with the hammer in the final end.
Epping defeated Sweden’s Niklas Edin 8-3 in the semifinals Sunday morning by scoring three in the fourth and seventh ends. He finished In a three-way tie for first in Pool B with a 3-1 record before defeating Scotland’s Ross Paterson 9-5 in Saturday’s quarter-final. He recorded threes in the third, fifth and seventh ends.
