Change your clocks, change your batteries

-

Peterborough Fire Services is recommending everyone install new batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they change their clocks for daylight saving time Saturday night or Sunday morning.

“In order for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job, they need to have working batteries,” fire department Chief Chris Snetsinger stated. “Twice a year, old batteries should be replaced. When you change your clocks on Nov. 4, Peterborough Fire Services wants everyone to take the time to install new batteries in all alarms.”

To survive a fire, you need to be provided with an early warning and know what to do when the smoke alarms sound, officials stated. It’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas.

Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuelburning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.

City residents received a battery recycling bag inside the Oct. 26 edition of Peterborough This Week. They are asked to place batteries in the bag, seal it shut, and place in on top of their “paper” blue box next week.

If you did not receive a bag, you can use a zip-lock bag, or pick one up at City Hall at 500 George St. N. No loose batteries are permitted in the one-time pickup.
