100 Bells

On Sunday November 11, at the going down on the sun, communities across Canada will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with the ringing of 100 bells.

The ringing of bells emulates the moments in 1918 when church bells across Europe tolled as four years of war had come to an end. The ringing of the bells, organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, begins in Newfoundland at 4:50 p.m. and moves across the country.

In Peterborough, church bells will be ringing downtown at Emmanuel United Church, 534 George St.; St John’s Anglican Church, 99 Brock St.; and the Cathedral of St Peter-in-Chains, 411 Reid St. When you hear the bells toll on November 11, take a moment to pause and remember all those who served and sacrificed.
