Holy Cross students first to visit memorial park in Trent Lakes

- MARLYS KERKMAN kerkmam@gmail.com

The Holy Cross Ramblers were the first school club to visit the John Earle Chase Memorial Park in Trent Lakes Township.

It was Take Me Outside Day, an opportunity for Canadians to help show the importance of spending time outside. More than 2,000,000 students and teachers headed outside on October 24 to support outdoor education and nature connection to show that the learning environment extends beyond four walls and a desk!

That is exactly what Holy

Cross students involved in the Holy Cross Ramblers did and helped affect environmental improvement to the John Earle Chase Memorial Park. With the help of volunteers from Kawartha Land Trust and Buckhorn Trails Association they planted 350 shrubs at the Chase property and helped with trail maintenance work. With this came lessons on the importance of planting native shrub species. They also learned about Kawartha Land Trust, what it does and its importance in preserving the land we love. These grade 9 and grade 12 students spent the whole day at the John Earle Chase Memorial Park finishing with a hike of the property before leaving at 4 p.m.

Buckhorn Trails Association

Members of the Buckhorn Trails Association are eagerly anticipating the installation of the parking lot at the John Earle Chase Memorial Park. There are trail maps installed at the trailhead and at various other places on the property to help the walker find his or her way through this beautiful property.

Buckhorn Trails Association is the prime steward for the property working with Kawartha Land Trust to develop a property work plan. Such things as trail mowing, annual clean up, regular trail walk throughs to make sure all possible hazards are demolished especially after storms, decommissioning of wells and other ideas that come up are some tasks that need to be done on a regular basis. BTA has other possible ideas to grow trails in the area. People interested in any of these activities are very welcome! Your help is needed in order to continue to grow trails and maintain present trails. Phone 705-657-1608 with any interest you may have. People from all areas are most welcome.

Good Buy Room

The Good Buy Room Thrift Store is located in the lower level of the Buckhorn Library on Lakehurst Road. The store is open Tuesday to Thursday 1 to 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donations of gently used clothing, accessories, footwear, housewares, linens, books, games and seasonal home décor items are accepted. Mattresses, televisions and infant safety equipment cannot be accepted.

Recently, two long time volunteers – Louise Jackson and Kay Nichol – were thanked as they retired from many years of serving with the Good Buy Room. Each volunteer is sincerely thanked by Good Buy Room staff for their time, energy and commitment to the store. All customers and those who donate to the store are also thanked.

Soon the store will be stocked with many Christmas items. You are invited to shop the sales and specials in December.

All proceeds from the Good Buy Room Store go to support the programs of the two libraries in the Municipality of Trent Lakes – the Buckhorn Library and the Cavendish Community Centre Branch.
