Peterborough remembers at local ceremonies this week

City’s main Remembrance Day event is Sunday at Confederation Square

- KAILEIGH HOWARD

A hundred years ago, on Nov. 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany. It called for a ceasefire, effective at 11 a.m. The brutal and gruesome battles came to an end. For this reason, we celebrate Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 every year.

With the day swiftly approaching, you may wonder what you can do to honour the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. The answer may lay in the surplus of Remembrance Day ceremonies happening this year.

Peterborough is holding an event on Sunday. As per usual, there will be a short parade. It will depart from PCVS at 9:55 a.m. and continue until 10:25 a.m. This is when it will return to the war memorial in Confederation Square, where a ceremony will honour our veterans.

Bridgenorth held its service Wednesday, organized by the Chemung Lake District Lions Club, to honour the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

It included the Chemong Public School Senior Band directed by Kori Windren, Rev. Ben Denhoed of Gilmour Memorial Baptist Church, emcee Rev. Anne Gowan-Blinn of Bridgenorth United Church, Smith-Ennismore Community

Policing, the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment Pipe Band and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 of Lakefield.

St. Joseph’s at Fleming was set to honour veterans Thursday at 2 p.m.

The township of Douro-Dummer will also be holding a ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the Warsaw cenotaph on Sunday, starting at 10:45 a.m. Prayers and the Roll of Honour will be recited by Mayor J. Murray Jones. Once the ceremony is finished, all attendees are invited to lunch at the township’s Town Hall.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 will be bringing a Remembrance Day ceremony to Selwyn on Sunday. It will occur at Selwyn’s Cenotaph Park. The community will gather for the start of the ceremony at 10:45 a.m. and remain until it ends at 12:30p.m.

The North Kawartha Township is holding a small, but impactful ceremony on Sunday. It invites its residents to come to the Apsley Legion Branch 381 at 10:45 a.m. The community will be holding a moment of silence together, to remember what has been lost.

If you can’t make any of those times, though, don’t worry. As with every year, the township of Otonabee-South Monaghan will be holding a parade and ceremony on Nov. 18.

There will be a parade, starting at 1 p.m. at the township’s Lion’s Den.

A ceremony will take place after the parade finishes, at 1:45 p.m. at Foley Park.
