A youthful Holy Cross Hurricanes senior girls’ basketball team captured the Kawartha AA championship on Friday.

The Hurricanes outscored the Adam Scott Lions 12-0 in overtime in a 59-47 victory in the final at Lindsay Collegiate. It was the third meeting of the season between the teams who split their two regular season encounters.

The Hurricanes have just one player in Grade 12 (Jennaya Wiarton), two Grade 9 students (Danni Nelson, Meggie Hiltz) and one Grade 10 (Julia Gemmiti). The rest are Grade 11 girls who were part of a COSSA junior championship team last year including Rachel Bjorgan, Katie Connelly, Abigail Hiltz, Molly Matthews and Brianna Thompson.

“They dug deep and decided they wanted to win,” said Tracey Musclow, who coached the Hurricanes with retired teacher Bev Quinlan. “They were tired but they were able to pull it together at the end and found that energy somewhere.”

It’s an unusually young senior team but very dedicated and determined, said Musclow.

“They’re really good athletes in general and they’ve worked very hard. They’ve trained hard and decided from the beginning of the season they really wanted to go for it and put the time in,” said Musclow. “They are driven young ladies who are pursuing excellence in a lot of areas of their lives, not just basketball.”

Both teams will travel to Quinte Region for COSSA on Thursday.

In semifinals, Adam Scott defeated Cobourg’s St. Mary’s Thunder 38-36 while Holy Cross beat the Lindsay Collegiate Spartans 52-42.

In junior AA action, LCVI defeated Adam Scott 47-26 in the final. The Spartans beat Holy Cross 37-16 in semifinals while Adam Scott beat St. Mary’s 38-27.

Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon Wildcats swept the Kawartha AAA junior and senior girls’ basketball titles.

The senior Wildcats defeated the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves 43-25 in Friday’s final on home court. In semifinals the Wildcats defeated the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins 67-30 while CCI beat the St. Peter’s Saints 32-28.

The junior AAA final was played on Thursday with the Wildcats edging CCI 33-32.

Weldon will host the COSSA AAA playoffs on Thursday.

Boys’ Volleyball

The St. Peter’s Saints won the Kawartha AAA junior boys’ volleyball title on Thursday defeating the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves 3-2 in the final.

The I.E. Weldon Wildcats captured the senior AAA title defeating the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins 3-0 in the final.
