Chiefs edged by Mojacks in Cougar Cup rematch

LAKEFIELD — In a rematch of last season’s Cougar Cup series, this time the Port Perry Mojacks prevailed over the Lakefield Hendren Funeral Home Chiefs. Despite being outshot 35-29, the Mojacks stayed in command all game to eke out a 3-2 win over the host Chiefs in PJHL action Tuesday night at the LakefieldS­mith Community Centre.

Port Perry jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a power-play goal by Ben Sheremeta assisted by James Boyle and Carter Thornton.

The Chiefs tied it up early in the second on a power-play goal of their own by Jeff Hawthorne, assisted by Jesse Merrill.

The Mojacks regained the lead late in the second on a power play by Spencer Robinson, assisted by Boyle and Derek Risebrough.

Lakefield’s Cole Robbins scored unassisted in the third period to knot it up at 2-2.

But about two minutes later

Port Perry regained the lead when Brendan Davis scored the game-winning goal unassisted. Lakefield goalie Andrew Barwinski stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss while Connor Latchford made 33 saves on 35 shots for his sixth win of the season.

Despite the loss, the defending provincial Schmalz Cup champion Chiefs remain in first place in the PJHL Orr Division at 13-4-0-1.

The North Kawartha Knights are two points behind in second but hold two games in hand. With the win the Mojacks improved to 11-5-0-1 and sit in fourth place, four points behind the Chiefs and with a game in hand.

The Chiefs will host two Tod Division teams in their next two games, facing the Picton Pirates on Saturday at 7:25 p.m. and hosting the Port Hope Panthers on Tuesday at 7:25 p.m.
