Fire at student residence on Spillsbury Dr.
No one hurt in $75K townhouse blaze
No one was hurt Thursday in a fire that caused $75,000 in damage to one of the 16 units of a townhouse complex at 246 Spillsbury Dr. near Fleming College.
No one was home in the unit when the blaze broke out, said city fire department platoon chief Shaun McClintock over the phone Thursday evening.
Although firefighters received an initial report that one person was home at the time, he said, they entered the townhouse to find nobody there.
Firefighters, police and ambulance were called sometime around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Unit 805 was fully engulfed at the time firefighters arrived, McClintock said, and the blaze had reached the third floor of the three-storey unit and burned through the roof.
The damage was contained to the one unit, he said.
Four people were displaced from their home, he said, and were being housed Thursday evening in another unit of the same complex at 246 Spillsbury Dr.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
City firefighters also evacuated some residents from an apartment building at 839 Talwood Dr. around 3:45 p.m. Thursday after a small fire in a garbage chute.
