Holy Cross Hurricanes win COSSA AA senior girls basketball silver

- EXAMINER STAFF

The Holy Cross Hurricanes senior girls returned from the COSSA AA basketball playoffs in Picton on Thursday with silver medals.

The Hurricanes are a young team with four girls of junior age dressed for the final and just one girl in Grade 12. It’s valuable experience for the coming years, said coach Tracey Musclow.

Holy Cross lost 64-45 to the Prince Edward County Collegiate Panthers in the final. The Panthers have won COSSA two of the past three years.

“Prince Edward County Collegiate was a very seasoned team,” Musclow said. “They had four girls in Grade 12. We had three girls in Grade 9, one in Grade 10, five girls in Grade 11 and one in Grade 12.

“This sets us up very well to take the next step next year at senior,” Musclow said.

“Two of our girls had never played in a COSSA game before and there were some nerves at the start as they hadn’t played at this level before. This is good experience for all our girls to learn what it takes to win a COSSA championship.”

Sisters Abbi and Meggie Hiltz led Holy Cross with 10 points each.

The Hurricanes, who were Kawartha champions, defeated the Bayside Red Devils 45-40 in semifinal play. Prince Edward beat the Adam Scott Lions 51-29 in the other semi.

In COSSA AA junior action, Adam Scott lost their semifinal game to the St. Theresa Titans 69-25.

Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon Wildcats swept the COSSA AAA junior and senior titles on home court on Thursday night.

The senior Wildcats triumphed over the Centre Hastings Centurions 51-41 in the final to advance to OFSAA Nov. 21-24 in London.

In semifinals, Weldon beat St. Theresa 30-26 while Centre Hastings defeated the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves 31-19.

In junior action, the Wildcats beat the Wolves 40-23 in the final. The Wildcats beat Centre Hastings 46-27 in the semifinals while CCI defeated Prince Edward 46-27.
