New children’s centre ready at park

The Ecology Park hosts a ribbon cutting and open house for the new children’s education shelter, slated for Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ecology park, 1899 Ashburnham Drive.

The event caps the first of seven phases of Peterborou­gh Green up’s Growing Ecology Park campaign. The project was made possible through generous donations, volunteer hours and support throughout this first year of building.

Also, find out what’s next on the list of upgrades to make Ecology Park more accessible to reach even more children and community members in the future.

Jamaican Self-Help

Jamaican Self Help hosts the 12th annual Artisan Show and Sale, planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Mark Street United Church, 90 Hunter St. E.

The event features more than 20 local artisans, with proceeds supporting youth and educationa­l projects in Jamaica while supporting artisans in the local community.

The weekend showcases a diverse selection of quality art and craft. Artisans will donate 20 percent of their sales to Jamaican Self Help.

“This is a juried show featuring local artisans. Patrons can expect to see new artisans as well as returning favorites,” says Liz Sine, chair of the show and sale committee.

The Artisan Show and Sale features a variety of hand-crafted items including: pottery, textile and fabric arts, knitted and woven items, beeswax products, metal and wood work, photograph­y, a wide variety of jewelry, fresh wreaths and much more.

A variety of homemade baked goods will also be for sale.

Admission is free, but donations at the door are greatly appreciate­d.

All are welcome.

Addictions Workshop

The Peterborou­gh Drug Strategy group presents Addictions

101: Exploring Substance Use and Gambling, part of their Question of Care series.

The event happens Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Peterborou­gh Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St.

The session will cover informatio­n related to substance use and effects; including viewing substance use on a continuum, how people make change, review of abstinence approach and harm reduction approach, recovery treatment options in Ontario, stamping out stigma and recovery concepts.

Peterborou­gh Horticultu­ral Society

The Peterborou­gh Horticultu­ral Society welcomes all to their November meeting set for Nov. 28 starting at 7 p.m. at the Peterborou­gh Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Guest speaker is Kerry Hackett, a medicinal herbalist & master gardener. Her topic is "What's the Buzz: Bee Amazed.”
