LINDSAY — Brad Johnston says he believes fitness tests for firefighters should be mandatory each year.

The Lindsay resident is in a position to comment now that he is a world champion in firefighter fitness.

Johnston won the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge for his age group at its annual competition in Sacramento, Calif. in October.

The challenge was founded by Dr. Paul Davis, a former firefighter/ paramedic who is an expert on physical fitness and employment standards in the public safety sector. It attracts hundreds of firefighters from U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments and now includes countries around the world. It aims to encourage firefighter fitness. Johnston, 47, won the challenge for the 45+ age group, against more than 400 competitors from 12 countries.
